Eye yi yi

We have vacation and projects galore next week, so of course, we are falling apart this week! J has a bruised arm and a sore rib from a coworker dropping his end of a generator they were lifting down at work on Sunday. Nothing serious though, thank goodness.

He was planning on returning to work on Tuesday, but the night before I had flashes of light in one eye, and figured I'd better have it checked out. Since I had to be dilated, J drove me to the Dr and the later to the retinal specialist she sent me to. Good news- although the gel inside my eyeball is shrinking, that is a normal age-related happening that does not affect eyesight, and the hole she thought she saw turned out to be a wrinkle in my retina.

The specialist got a little peeved with me and my very strong blink reflex. He's not the first eye doctor to do so, either. I tried my best and was congratulating myself on looking in the right direction, when he told me I was squeezing so hard it made it difficult for him. This from the man who was probing around my eyelid with what looked like a crochet hook! Anyway, all's well that ends well.

There was a humorous moment, as we patients were all dilating in the hallway, the 'regular' eye Dr. came in to say hello to the specialist who uses this office one afternoon a week.

Dr to specialist : How are you doing? It's been awhile since I've seen you.

Specialist: Well, it's our second day of being empty nesters. All three kids are in college.

Dr: Oh ho- Sex in the living room!

Moment of silence, then Specialist: Well, we better get blinds on the windows first.

Oh no you didn't!

I've read quite a few blogs lately lamenting the end of summer, or celebrating the advent of autumn. Coincidentally, all the writers either have, or teach children. Well, I have offspring, but not at home and no one is in school any more, so Labor Day is not the end of my summer.

September can be beautiful in Maine, and quite often we have semi-heat waves as the kiddos sit in their schoolrooms. I am counting on this happening again. J and I have arranged for days off next week, and have many plans for that time. Plans that mostly involve having warm, dry weather.  Fall does not officially start until the 21(or 22nd?) and by gum I want my summer to be warm to the end, and beyond!

As it is written, so shall it be.

Did you see that one, deah?

Life is back to as close to normal as it gets around here. We got our power back after about 25 hours without it, and I immediately washed the bathroom and did the dishes. Since we have a well, we don't have water when we have no power, so it was a bathtub of water and manual flushes for us. And the "man" should be taken out of manual because neither one of them could grasp the concept of 'half a bucket held waist high and pour into the bowl'.  I would hear water pouring and then "huh" and more water.

Shoeshine is back in CO and we are missing his help today while finishing the cleanup. We were smart enough to get the heavy stuff done while he was here though.

We did our grocery shopping early while we waited for the dew to dry, and saw a few amusing signs along the way.  One homemade one advertised "kiddling" wood for sale- that's just embarrassing.  Then there was the "glow in the dark mini golf", which at first glance seemed like a fun idea. But, mini golf usually involves kids- kids with golf clubs- kids with golf clubs in the dark?  Hmm.

The one I liked best was posted outside a hall: GRANGE SUPPA.
Ayuh, this is Maine.
